Teaching Kids the Benefits of Philanthropy
The organization is under the leadership of Gregg M. Cummings and Elizabeth C. Cummings. Mr. Cummings is a senior vice president and financial planner with Morgan Stanley in St. Paul, MN and a dedicated community leader who serves on several nonprofit boards of directors. Mrs. Cummings is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, mother and community activist, who also serves on several nonprofit boards.
The organization is governed currently by a three-member Board of directors that meets frequently to develop educational and training materials used in its 7, one-hour training sessions.
Minnesota Kids Give aspires to better the world by teaching children how giving philanthropically will help society as well as allowing them to grow personally. This is accomplished through education, exploration and partnership that provide opportunities for children to contribute.
A six-hour participatory education experience. Programming is currently conducted in a partner education facility. The two foundation principals teach the course and assess student response.
A volunteer experience that enables student participants to learn about several community non-profit organizations, visit their locations, where appropriate, and meet with staff members of those organizations.
Students then have an opportunity to make a financial contribution of $100 to the organizations in which they found the most interest for them personally.
MN Kids Give is providing the educational context for student participants to develop a basic working knowledge about financial philanthropy and to be able to effectively select nonprofits organizations to which to donate money.
MN Kids Give try to not only help student participants to better understand financial philanthropy, but to provide a collective volunteer participation experience with and for a nonprofit organization and assess the experience in terms of their contribution of time and effect on the nonprofit organization and its clients and services.
The actual visitation to a nonprofit organization and the presenting of a $100 check to it for use by staff in a program or service selected by each young person.
The program is held in Mendota Heights, during the spring quarter of Mendota’s after school Enrichment program. Second through fourth graders are welcome to participate in the six, one hour per week curriculum.
The initial program was held in Roseville, Minnesota. It attracted 11 student participants. A total of $1,100 was given by the organization to various nonprofits in support of the student participants.
The most recent program was held during a summer community center program in 2018 Saint Paul, Minnesota with middle school aged participants.
